Tough break all around

It is said that momentum in baseball is the next day's pitcher. The Yankees saw that first hand.

Less than 48 hours after the euphoria of their ALDS Game 5 victory over the Orioles, the Yankees find themselves in an 0-2 hole in the ALCS to the Tigers.

Everything that could go wrong, did so for the Yankees, who were rendered helpless on offense by Doug Fister and Anibal Sanchez. With the exception of a four-run uprising against Detroit close Jose Valverde in the ninth inning of Game 1, the Yankees have not scored against a Tigers pitcher in 20 innings.

The Yankee big bats have been silent from Robinson Cano to Alex Rodriguez to Nick Swisher to Curtis Granderson, making a one-run deficit seem as big as six-run deficit.

Making things worse is New York losing Derek Jeter for the remainder of the playoffs with a broken ankle.

With the way the Yankees are hitting, and with the Tigers' two best pitchers — Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer — on the mound in Game 3 and 4, the rest of the Yankees' season might last two games.
